UDF Divided Over P.V. Anvar’s Entry: Closed Chapter or a New Political Opening?

Thiruvananthapuram | June 25, 2025:Speculation surrounding the possible entry of former MLA P.V. Anvar into the United Democratic Front (UDF) has sparked confusion and division within the opposition alliance. While leaders like K.M. Shaji have hinted that Anvar’s "expression of interest" phase is over, opinions remain sharply divided on whether his induction would benefit or harm the coalition.

"It’s a Closed Chapter" – Ramesh Chennithala
Senior Congress leader and former Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala categorically dismissed the speculation, terming the developments as unofficial and inconsequential. “For the Congress party, this is a closed chapter,” he said, signaling that the party is not pursuing the matter further.

IUML: Cautious and Concerned
Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader P.K. Kunhalikutty responded with measured caution. Emphasizing the need to protect the secular and inclusive fabric of the alliance, he said any such discussions must be approached with utmost seriousness. The IUML has also warned against allowing space for communal or sectarian extremism under the UDF banner.

Allies Divided
The UDF’s constituent parties remain split on the issue.

Kerala Congress (Joseph) stressed that individual inductions should not compromise the alliance’s collective identity or ideological integrity.

RSP leaders underscored the need for transparency and adherence to ideological consistency.

JSS and Kerala Congress (Jacob) have shown some openness but are yet to announce any official stance.

A Political Risk?
Anvar’s philanthropic initiatives and popularity among sections of youth once made him an attractive prospect for Congress insiders. However, concerns over his religiously-tinged political positions have raised red flags about whether his inclusion could undermine the UDF’s secular commitments.

As the UDF prepares for major internal realignments in the coming months — including decisions on candidate selection, ideological reaffirmation, and inter-party cooperation — the question remains: Is P.V. Anvar truly out of the picture, or could his entry catalyze a new round of political debate within Kerala’s opposition camp?
